Chakra1For millennia the Chakras have been an integral part of Yoga philosophy in India. The word ‘chakra’ is Sanskrit for ‘wheel’. This is because the chakras are similar to wheels through which we give and receive energy – Prana (AKA Chi, Ki). When the energy is out of balance, health issues arise in that area.

The main chakras, their corresponding colour, the emotions accumulated and the health problems associated with each one:

1. The crown chakra VIOLET – the muscles, connective tissues and genes – a purpose in life

Traits to balance: clear sense of purpose in life vs undefined purpose, a conviction that I create my life vs a conviction that the heavens direct my life, a belief that I can influence events in my life vs a belief that things happen the way they should, the capacity for attachment in my life vs the capacity  for detachment in my life
Health problems: Guillan-Barré Syndrome, Lou Gehrig’s disease, multiple sclerosis, vitiligo

2. The third eye chakra INDIGO – brain and sensory organs – perception, thought, morality
Traits to balance: perception (clarity vs ambiguity, focus vs lack of focus, acuity vs blindness, receptivity) thought (wisdom vs ignorance, knowledge, educability, rationality vs irrationality rigidity and obsessiveness vs flexibility)
Health problems: Ménière’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, paranoia

3. The throat chakra BLUE – thyroid, throat and neck – communication, timing, will
Traits to balance: expression, comprehension, speaking vs listening, pushing forward vs waiting, willful vs compliant
Health problems: thyroid diseases (hyper vs hypo, cancer) cervical disk problems

4. The heart chakra GREEN – heart, lungs and breasts – emotions, intimacy and nurture
Traits to balance: passion/love, anger, range, bitterness, resentment, joy exuberance, stoicism, courage, loss, abandonment, isolation, giving vs receiving help, fathering, mothering, martyrdom, forgiveness
Health problems: heart attacks, breast cancer, breast cysts, heart disease, heart arrhythmia, lung cancer

5. The solar plexus chakra YELLOW – the gastrointestinal tract – responsibility and self esteem
Traits to balance: adequacy (skills, competence, making it work vs giving up), addictions, aggression (threat, intimidation, territoriality) vs defensiveness (restraint, entrapment, avoidance) boundaries, competitiveness
Health problems: ulcers, Crohn’s disease, obesity, alcoholism, anorexia-bulimia

6. The sex chakra ORANGE – the sex organs and the lower back – relationships and drive
Traits to balance: active/passive, direct, inhibited, shame, independence, giving/taking, assertive/submissive, opposes/cooperation
Health problems: kidney stones, infertility, colon cancer, lower back pain, fibroid cysts, cervical cancer, chronic pelvic pain, prostate cancer

7. The base chakra RED – blood and bones – helplessness and hopelessness
Traits to balance: trust, dependence, belonging, fearfulness, adaptability, ability to cope, despair, loss, bereavement, depression
Health problems: chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, lupus, immune system problems

Whenever there is an imbalance within the above traits, the corresponding physical health issues tend to arise as your own body’s intuitive network’s way of letting you know what is not working in your behaviour patterns. The standard hand placements of Reiki healing target the seven major chakras, which are often rendered dysfunctional and discolored – sometimes even completely closed – by these problems.
